Have you ever heard something- a phrase, a note, a song- that moved you so deeply your heart ached? Something that reminded you that you were real? Real and alive? That is what twenty one pilots did for me. Shadows coated every sunset, my body was heavy with sadness. Demons ruled every thought I had like a dictator that would never leave. Smoke filled the air around me; I couldn't breathe. Music was my lifeline during these times. It still is. I am not exaggerating when I say that Tyler and Josh aided in me being alive today. Their music reminded me of how the sadness alters your thoughts and keeps you under. Rock bottom gets lower and lower and lower and you're sinking right along with it. You're looking around- everyone is swimming and laughing and you should be too, you should be too but you can't! You can't and you're terrified, terrified of the dark bottom of the ocean, but innately curious too, a sick curiosity- how far down does it go? And when you reach the bottom, finally, six years after you began your dive... you've run out of air. Every note of music constantly on repeat was a breath of oxygen in my lungs. Every word, every strum, every beat- another drop of life in me. I followed the light up, up, up, out of the black ocean and sang to the sky. I wasn't drowning anymore.I don't believe in God anymore. Music saved me, not Him. But I thank the powers that be every single day for those two men.
Tyler Joseph, Joshua Dun... If you ever see this, YOU CHANGED THE WORLD. Never, ever stop being who you are. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
